FSU wants policy changed to allow 'Seminoles'
Tuesday, August 9, 2005

Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell said the school will ask the NCAA to amend its policy to allow the "Seminoles" nickname.

Wetherell has previously said the school will challenge the policy in court. But the NCAA said individual institutions can appeal the decision.

FSU wants the policy to recognize that the Seminole Tribe of Florida supports the name. The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, however, opposes it.

David Narcomey, general council member for the Seminole Nation, and Max Osceola, a council members for the Seminole Tribe, appeared on a radio program to discuss the policy. Narcomey said the Florida Seminoles have a "political agenda." Osceola said that some mascots, like the "Redskins," are offensive.
