Study confirms benefits of diabetes control

A study published in today's issue of the
New England Journal of Medicine found that diabetics who strictly controlled their blood sugar levels can cut their risk of heart attacks and strokes by half.
The 17-year study involved 1,400 people with Type 1 diabetes, a form that usually develops early in life. Most Native Americans, including young ones, have Type 2 diabetes, the most common form in the United States.
Other research has shown that control of Type 2 diabetes can reduce the risk of heart disease and prevent eye, kidney and nerve damage.
