Stockbridge-Munsee Band asks to join Oneida case
Wednesday, January 18, 2006

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians in Wisconsin is seeking to intervene in the Oneida Nation's foreclosure case in New York.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band once lived on the Oneida Reservation in New York before being removed to Wisconsin. The tribe says it should be allowed to intervene in order to determine its rights.

The Oneida Nation opposes the request, saying the judge's ruling won't affect the Wisconsin tribe. Two counties who are defendants in the Oneida land claim aren't objecting to the intervention request.

The case involves two separate lawsuits. In one lawsuit, a federal judge ruled that the counties can't foreclose on the tribe's land even if the land isn't held in trust.
