South Dakota Indian HIV/AIDS cases steady, still high

The number of HIV/AIDS cases among American Indians in South Dakota remained steady over the past six months but the rate is still among the highest in the state.

According to the January 2006 surveillance report, American Indians represented 15 percent of HIV/AIDS cases, the same as six months ago. But American Indians only make up about 9 percent of the state population.

A map contained in the reported showed that the HIV/AIDS cases among American Indians are concentrated on the state's reservations.
