Cobell vows fight to resolve trust fund lawsuit

Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in the Indian trust fund lawsuit, spoke at the Border Town Racism Conference. in Missoula, Montana, on Friday.

Cobell urged attendees to contact members of Congress to resolve the case. “The only way to get this done is if we stay right there in their faces,” she was quoted by The Missoulian as saying.

Cobell will be in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to continue the fight. She has organized a rally and march on the day of a crucial appeals court hearings. The Bush administration is trying to have Judge Royce Lamberth removed from the case and overturn a computer security injunction.

Drummers from the Blackfeet Nation will join Cobell at 8:30am at the federal courthouse on 333 Constitution Avenue NW. The hearing begins at 9:30am and is expected to last at least an hour.

After the hearing, the drummers will lead a march to the National Museum of the American Indian. Attorney Keith Harper of the Native American Rights Fund, Chairman Tex Hall of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, Chief Jim Gray of the Osage Nation and Mary Johnson, a Navajo landowner will speak.

At 3:45pm, Cobell, Harper, Hall and Gray will be joined by former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) for a discussion. "Addressing Over a Century of Shame: The Cobell v. Norton Case," takes place at the Center for American Progress [RSVP].
