Gila River tribe changes stance on highway talks

The Gila River Indian Community of Arizona has changed its stance on a proposed highway that could run through the reservation.

The tribe passed a resolution in 2001 that barred consideration of the highway. But tribal leaders this week decided they wanted to talk to state and federal officials about the project.

The state Department of Transportation has been trying to get the tribe to come to the table. A reservation route would ease some of the project's headaches.
