Hopi Tribe narrows candidates for new chairman

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona will hold a general election on February 7 to choose a new chairman.

Ben Nuvamsa, from the village of Shungopavi, will face Harry Nutumya, from Oravyi. The two won the most votes in a special election held January 24.

The vote was held to replace former chairman Ivan Sidney. He was ousted after an alcohol-related incident at a hotel off the reservation.

Nuvamsa and Nutumya, along with other hopefuls, shared their views and ideas at a candidates' forum on January 25 at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Nuvamsa called for an overhaul of the tribal constitution. Nutumya wants to combine the offices of the chairman and the vice chairman.
