Town voters approve Aquinnah Wampanog agreement
Friday, March 9, 2007

Voters in the town of Aquinnah approved a land-use agreement with the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts.

The vote was about 60 percent in favor. But most of those who voted no were tribal members, The Martha's Vineyard Gazette reported.

The agreement was reached after the tribe lost a major sovereignty case. The tribe waived its sovereign immunity through a land claims settlement act of Congress, the state's top court ruled.

The case came after the tribe built a small shed on land within town limits. To avoid future disputes, the agreement spells out how the tribe and the town will address land-use issues.

The tribe is based on the island of Martha's Vineyard.
