Michigan school district's Indian program cut

The Grand Rapids Public Schools district in Michigan is blaming budget shortfalls and the No Child Left Behind Act for the elimination of its Indian program.

For five years, the Bimaadiziwin Program has helped keep Indian students in school. The program provided an alternative to regular high school and incorporated Indian culture.

But the school district is closing the building that housed the school and its 93 students. Parents say they were misled by school officials and were promised the program would survive even if the building was sold.

The students will have to attend a regular high school or other alternative programs.
