Police alerted to Native residential payout scams

Authorities in Alberta are preparing for rush a fraud, scams and drug activity as the $2 billion Native residential school abuse settlement is being distributed.

As much as $50 million could be flowing into Alberta as a result of the settlement. Police say they have already seen examples of scams targeting former residential students.

Each former student receives a base payment of $10,000 payment and an additional $3,000 for each year of attendance, up to 12 years. People with documented abuse claims can ask for more money.
