State threatens takeover of schools serving Navajos
Friday, September 5, 2003

The state of New Mexico held a show cause hearing on Thursday for five public schools that serve a predominantly Navajo student population.

According to The Farmington Daily Times, the five school principals offered little specifics to raise test scores and academic performance. One principal, Frank Todacheeny of Naschitti Elementary, said poverty and dysfunction on the Navajo Nation affects the students.

A representative of the Navajo Nation appeared to be skeptical of the promises to reform, the paper reported. The tribe wants to work more closely with the schools.
