Officials seek delay of Jena Choctaw land-into-trust
Tuesday, December 2, 2003

Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.) and officials in Louisiana want the Bureau of Indian Affairs to delay a decision to take land into trust for the Jena Band of Choctaws.

McCrery and others are asking for a 45-day extension to an environmental assessment the BIA released last month. The comment period is set to end Friday.

The Jena Choctaw Tribe received federal recognition through the BIA in 1994 but lacks a land base. The tribe is actively pursuing a casino but a compact it negotiated with outgoing Gov. Mike Foster (D) was rejected by the Bush administration last year for imposing high revenue-sharing without a guarantee of exclusivity.
