Elders have until New Year to prove they are Indian
Friday, December 19, 2003
A total of 132 people, including many elders, have until January 2 to prove they are rightful members of Isleta Pueblo in New Mexico. A letter sent by the tribal council notified the 132 that their membership is in question. They have to show they are at least one-half Isleta Pueblo blood. In the meantime, their $2,000 Christmas payment was withheld. At least one tribal council member says the letter is illegal. Gov. Alvino Lucero would not comment to The Albuquerque Journal about the controversy. The tribe has 2,800 members, according to The Journal. Get the Story:
