Date for House hearing on recognition not set
Friday, February 13, 2004

The House Government Reform Committee has agreed to hold a hearing on federal recognition but a date hasn't been set, The New Haven Register reports.

Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) sits on the committee. He is an outspoken critic of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian gaming industry. He has introduced bills to "reform" recognition and change gaming but has seen opposition from Indian Country.

The committee previously held a hearing on the subject. Shays and others bashed then-assistant secretary Neal McCaleb for not seeking more money for federal recognition.
