Janklow asks court to clear manslaughter charge

Former South Dakota governor and congressman Bill Janklow (R) asked the state Supreme Court to clear him of felony manslaughter or grant him a new trial.

Janklow was convicted of killing a motorcyclist in an August 2003 accident. He was speeding at the time and served 100 days in a county jail.

Janklow says the judge and prosecutors made mistakes that affected the jury. He says the jury should not have heard about his past driving record. He also says the jury should have been allowed to consider that his diabetic condition affected his state of consciousness at the time of the accident.
