Aquash murder defendant awaits extradition

A Canadian man accused of murdering American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash has been jailed pending his extradition to the U.S.

John Graham, a Native from Canada's Yukon Territory, won't be sent to South Dakota to face trial until his appeal is exhausted. A final decision could come from Canada's justice minister.

Graham is the second person charged with Aquash's murder. The first person, Arlo Looking Cloud, was found guilty but has appealed.

Aquash was Mi'kmaq from Nova Scotia and became involved in AIM during the 1970s. She was murdered on the Pine Ridge Reservation in December 1975. Her body was discovered in February 1976.
