Si Tanka wants protection from Education Department
Thursday, June 9, 2005

Si Tanka University of South Dakota has asked a federal judge to prevent the Department of Education from revoking school's rights to take part in federal student loan and grant programs, the Associated Press reports.

Si Tanka filed for bankruptcy due to lack of funds at its off-reservation campus in Huron, which closed in March. School officials hope the problems won't affect the campus on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation so they asked the judge to act.

Si Tanka defaulted on $6.6 million worth of loans, faces a $2 million federal tax lien and has an 80-page list of people it owes money, according to the bankruptcy court papers.
