Candidate for Hopi chair faces residency challenge
Friday, February 2, 2007

The top vote-getter in the Hopi Tribe's recent special primary is facing questions about his eligibility to serve in public office.

Ben Nuvamsa came in first out of 14 candidates. But some of his opponents said he hasn't lived on the Arizona reservation for two years.

Nuvamsa disputes the allegations. He said the Hopi election board certified him to run for office.

The tribal council will meet February 5 to discuss the issue. A complaint also was filed in tribal court.

The general election is February 24.
