Lumbee Tribe presses for federal recognition

Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on federal recognition.
Opening Statements | Panel 1 | Q&A
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina deserves legislative recognition, its chairman told the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

The Lumbees are subject to a termination-era law that identifies them as "Indians" but bars them from being treated as a federally recognized tribe. Another tribe that was in a similar situation -- the Tiguas of Texas -- eventually won legislative recognition.

The Lumbees hope for same and are backed by Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina), Sen. Richard Burr (R-North Carolina), a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-North Carolina). At the hearing yesterday, all three spoke in favor of a bill to recognize the tribe.

The House passed the bill but the Senate has yet to act.The only other recognized tribe in North Carolina -- the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians - says the Lumbees are not legitimate.
