Standing Rock Sioux Tribe opposes 'Sioux'

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe voted 8-1 last Friday to oppose the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

The tribe's position would mean the school has to get rid of the controversial name and logo. UND signed a settlement to eliminate "Sioux" within three years unless it wins tribal approval.

The Spirit Lake Nation, the other Sioux tribe based in North Dakota, has not taken action on the issue.
