Eastern Cherokee Tribe confronts absentee voting
Tuesday, September 30, 2003

The Eastern Band of Cherokees will continue impeachment proceedings against a council member as the tribe's top court hears a challenge to the recent election.

At issue in both disputes is the role of absentee voters. Council member Bob Blankenship, who was re-elected but has been ousted from his seat, is accused of using a membership list to mailing information to off-reservation voters.

Absentee voters played a crucial role in the election. Three council seats and the office of principal chief were decided by off-reservation voters. The tribe's Supreme Court will hear a challenge to these races.
