Conn. agency reverses decision on tribe's authority
Friday, October 24, 2003

Connecticut's Department of Public Health has rescinded its decision to recognize the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's authority over a larger water service area.

The Norwich Bulletin reports that the extent of the tribe's authority will be resolved by a state committee handling water rights.

Local leaders and state attorney general Richard Blumenthal objected to the water authority because they claimed it would allow the tribe to expand its land base. They filed a lawsuit to challenge the department's decision.

The department had recognized the tribe's powers over land in fee status.
