Donald Trump rehashes 'Pocahontas' slur as Elizabeth Warren hits road for Hillary Clinton

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump lashed out at Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) as the popular lawmaker joined Democrat Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail for the first time on Monday.

Trump again hurled the "Pocahontas" slur at Warren in reference to her unproven claims of Indian ancestry. "She made up her heritage, which I think is racist. I think she's a racist, actually because what she did was very racist," the real estate mogul told NBC News in a phone interview.

And the Republican who first brought up the issue resurfaced to add fuel to the fire. Scott Brown, a Trump supporter who lost his U.S. Senate seat to the fast-rising Warren back in 2012, thinks he has a way to settle the controversy.

Warren "can take a DNA test" to prove her ancestry, Brown said on a conference call organized by the Republican National Committee, The Washington Post reported. Echoing Trump's words, he said her heritage claims amounted to a "reverse form of racism."

Warren, who was born and raised in Oklahoma, has long brushed off the attacks and they have not affected her standing among Democrats or among voters in Massachusetts. But she has never provided documentation of Indian heritage, only saying that grew up hearing stories about it from her family.

"Everyone on our mother’s side — aunts, uncles, and grandparents — talked openly about their Native American ancestry,” Warren wrote in her 2014 book, A Fighting Chance. “My brothers and I grew up on stories about our grandfather building one-room schoolhouses and about our grandparents’ courtship and their early lives together in Indian Territory."

Lack of documents aside, a DNA test would not necessarily show whether Warren has Indian ancestors.

Warren has endorsed Clinton and the pair appeared at a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Monday. Both criticized Trump, whose standing in the polls has suffered as an overwhelming majority of voters consider him to be "unfairly biased" against women, minorities and people of the Muslim faith and about two-thirds believe he is unqualified to serve as president.
