Highway extension to run through Haskell wetlands
Monday, December 15, 2003

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Friday approved a permit for the state of Kansas to complete a highway through the wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University.

The state needed a permit because the highway would affect the wetlands, where Haskell alumni are believed to be buried. Tribes, Haskell students and alumni and environmental groups oppose the state's plans.

Jackie Mitchell, a council member for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas, said federal officials didn't listen to the tribes concerns about the highway. Environmental groups said they would file a lawsuit.
