Judges in Canada approve residential school deal

Judges in seven courts across Canada have approved the $1.9 billion residential school abuse settlement.

The deal calls for all former students to receive $10,000, plus $3,000 for each additional year they attended a school. Natives with documentable claims of abuse can receive more money.

In addition to the payouts, the settlement includes $125 million for the aboriginal healing fund, $60 million for a truth and reconciliation process and $20 million for commemorative project.

The residential schools were sponsored by the Canadian government and run by religious organizations. The courts have said both bear liability for abuses that occurred.
