Police chief suspended for inquiry in teen's death

The deputy police chief in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation into his handling of the death of a Native teen.

Deputy chief Dan Wiks told the media last year that the police were not linked to Neil Stonechild's disappearance in 1990. But at the inquiry into Stonechild's death, he testified that he knew two police officers were considered suspects by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Police have been testifying at the inquiry but they also have been conducting surveillance of the people who attend. The presiding judge will conduct an investigation.

Testimony on Wednesday came from a doctor who questioned how Stonechild, 17, received marks on his face. Stonechild appeared badly beaten in photos that weren't released until last year.
