Environmentalists at odds with Klamath Tribes

Environmentalist are opposing a proposal to return 690,000 acres of national forest land to the Klamath Tribes of Oregon.

The tribes lost the land through successive treaties in the late 1800s and finally with termination in 1954. But tribal leaders are working with the Bush administration to reclaim land and settle other long-standing issues.

Environmentalists say the tribe won't be able to take care of the land in the Winema and Fremont national forests. They are pushing an alternate proposal that would require land buyouts from willing private sellers.
