Opinion: Janklow's time should match the crime
Monday, December 15, 2003
"Bill Janklow was convicted of manslaughter last Monday, and the memory of those Long Beach policemen has been rattling around in my brain ever since. Janklow went from bullyboy political kingpin to ward of the state in a split second of arrogant indifference to the law. He is ours now, for the rest of his life, in a way that neither he nor we could have ever imagined.
And I, for one, believe he does us no service in prison.
Take away Bill Janklow's driving privileges. Strap an ankle bracelet to his leg. And send him to every teenage driver education class in the state. Teach him about highway safety, the value of seatbelts, the meaning of speed limits and stop signs (STOP means STOP! - even for big shots who are late, late to a very important date), then send him out to every PTA and chamber of commerce and Rotary Club in the state. Let him spend his mornings dressed in a day-glow vest, escorting school children across the street. Teach him to put that hand-held "Stop" sign out in front of speeding cars with the lives of children in his charge."
