Hopi vice chairman jailed in leadership dispute

The vice chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona was arrested and jailed for refusing to allow the ousted chairman to take office.

The Hopi Appellate Court reinstated chairman Ben Nuvamsa to his post for 15 days. But vice chairman Todd Honyaoma Sr. said the tribal council wouldn't abide by the decision.

Nuvamsa showed up to the tribal offices on Monday and tried to get to work. Honyaoma was subsequently arrested for defying the court order and was released after he promised not to interfere.

Nuvamsa was elected in February. Less than a month into the job, he was removed by the tribal council following a dispute over his eligibility to hold public office.
