"Back in the old days - I used to hate it when old uncles and aunts started a conversation with those words, but here goes - Halloween was glorious time on the Fort Berthold, N.D., reservation. My hometown was Elbowoods, N.D., also called "Dog Town" (every family had at least a dog or two). Halloween was a night of fright and fun.

This old reservation community now sits under 50 feet of Lake Sakakawea. The town was built some distance from the old village of the Sahnish, Mandan and Hidatsa called Like-A-Fishhook village. That was the last earth-lodge village of our people. The people moved to Elbowoods, a town of mainly log houses."
