DeLay faces ethics inquiry over ties to Abramoff

The House ethics committee is gearing up for an investigation into embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

DeLay has already been rebuked three times by the panel. He now faces a lengthy probe into his ties with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is accused of bilking six tribes out of $82 million.

One allegations against DeLay centers on an overseas trip to England and Scotland. The trip was partly funded by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, one of Abramoff's clients. House ethics rules bar travel paid by lobbyist.

Other DeLay trips were arranged and financed by Abramoff, according to news reports. The latest involves a 1997 jaunt to Russia for which Abramoff shared DeLay's expenses.

The House ethics committee includes Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), a member of the Chickasaw Nation and the only Native American in Congress. Cole donate $5,000 to DeLay's legal defense fund -- after receiving $15,000 from DeLay's political action committee, according to The New York Times.
