Whiteclay activists protest beer distributor

Activists who oppose the sale of liquor in Whiteclay, Nebraska, held a protest at one of the companies that distributes beer to the border town.

Native activists and Nebraskans for Peace say the High Plains Budweiser distributorship in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, is not acting responsibly by selling liquor to stores in the town. "Many of them are our children, scores of children who are dead because of alcohol that is illegally exported into Pine Ridge from Nebraska with the misery, the devastation that goes with it," Frank Lamere, a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, told KOTA News.

High Plains executives didn't meet with the protesters as requested. The company issued a press release saying that it promotes responsible drinking.

Whiteclay is located a few miles from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Beer stores there sell millions of cans a beer every year, mostly to tribal members.
