UND president to meet with Spirit Lake Nation

The president of the University of North Dakota will meet with the Spirit Lake Nation on Tuesday to discuss the school's "Fighting Sioux" logo and nickname.

President Charles Kupchella hopes to stop the tribe from opposing the name. The school needs the tribe's support as part of its appeal to the NCAA's ban on Indian mascots during post-season tournaments.

The Spirit Lake council is considering a resolution to rescind its prior support for "Sioux." Tribal members have already voted to oppose the name. Other Sioux tribes oppose the name as well.
