Calif. tribes want apology from Schwarzenegger
Friday, October 10, 2003
Tribes won't renegotiate their gaming compacts until governor-elect Arnold
Schwarzenegger "apologizes to the tribal governments of California for attacking us in the campaign," the chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians said.
"He used us as red herrings to get voters distracted from the real issues," Macarro told The Los Angeles Times. "We are not part of California's budget crisis, and we're not going to stand by and take responsibility for it."
Schwarzenegger named his transition team yesterday and reiterated his campaign promise
to renegotiate the agreements. He wants tribes to share more revenues with the state, and would consider lifting the 2,000-per-tribe limit on slot machines.
Even with that possible concession, Macarro said: "We have 16 years left on our compact. Nothing can compel us to open that compact."
