Calif. tribes put aside rhetoric of recall election

California tribes with casinos spent $12 million to keep Arnold Schwarzenegger out of the governor's office. They didn't succeed but none appear to be holding a grudge against the incoming governor, whose campaign ads charging that tribes were just another "special interest" galvanized voters.

Tribes now hope to establish a good relationship with the governor-elect, and both have something to offer. The tribes have casino revenues that can patch up holes in the state budget. Schwarzenegger appears willing to negotiate to lift the 2,000-per-tribe limit on slot machines. "Revenue sharing is definitely going to be on the table," an aide told The New York Times. "The smarter tribes will cut a good deal early and move on with making billions more."
